Habitat at Halfway Bush

Services at our Halfway Bush site ceased in 2022; since then, the buildings have been unused although we have continued to maintain them and the extensive grounds on which they stand.

Over the last three years we have been exploring, together with Habitat for Humanity (“HFH”), the possibility of redeveloping the Halfway Bush site to help provide affordable housing for families who might not otherwise be able to buy a home. HFH collaborates with local communities to help Kiwis navigate the housing obstacles they face.

Earlier this year we entered into an agreement with HFH to sell the Halfway Bush property, with the sale being finalised in mid-November 2024. HFH concept plans allow for building six new homes on the site, with provision for off-street parking, green space and other shared amenities.

The ethos and values of HFH fit well with those of Flagstaff. We look forward to continuing our journey together.

Where appropriate, taonga from the buildings and grounds were either returned to the families of the original donors or retained by Flagstaff Community Church with the blessing of those families.

Among the taonga is a stained-glass window which has its own special story—more on that at the right time. We will eventually instal the window in a prominent position at our church building in Wakari.

The Halfway Bush congregation is an important part of the Flagstaff whakapapa; the window serves as an important reminder of their faithful contribution to our shared life over many years.

Watch this space for more news on our partnership with HFH and the wonderful history of the Halfway Bush stained-glass window.
