Matariki 2023 Tree Planting
On Saturday 22 July members of Flagstaff Community Church braved cold, wintry conditions to plant out many native trees and undertake track/stream maintenance in the School Creek reserve adjacent to our property. We had a turnout of 25 people over the course of the day, each one keen to play their part as we continue the restoration project that began in 2017.
Aside from tree planting there was a small mountain of tree mulch to spread along the track that follows the contours of the stream within the reserve. Provided by Delta from reserve clearing work nearby, the mulch not only helps to suppress weeds but provides a safe, non-slip surface.
Volunteers of all ages and stages pitched in over the course of four hours or so, reducing the tree mulch mountain to a modest mound and planting out 96 trees. This represents about half of the trees we obtained early this year, with the remainder to be planted out by members of the Monday afternoon creek working group in due course.
On Saturday and Sunday evenings the light display strung through trees along the track made for a fun outing for those keen to enjoy and celebrate the results of our mahi.
A special thanks to all of those who did preparatory work beforehand and those who came along on the day, many different people doing the mahi whether planning, organising, track preparation, wood-chipping, spreading mulch, planting, catering to the hungry masses, and of course cleaning up afterwards. Looking forward to doing it all again next year.
