About Us

Flagstaff Community Church is a Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa New Zealand. We are one church that meets in two locations with 3 distinct and different styles of worship.  We enjoy meeting together regularly in worship to sing, share together in scripture (and good coffee) and serve our local community.

Our history
We began as the Wakari Congregation in 1913 under the Maori Hill Presbyterian Church.  In 1969 the West Dunedin Union parish was inaugurated and both of our parishes separately came under this governance. Also in 1969 the Wakari Congregation moved to our current site, in 1986 the West Dunedin Union Parish was dissolved and we joined with the Halfway Bush congregation to become Flagstaff Union Parish. In 2011 we made a decision to move out of the union and become solely Presbyterian and changed our name to Flagstaff Community Church.

Our area
We are located in the western suburbs of Dunedin on ‘whanau paki’ Flagstaff in Halfway Bush and Wakari.  The Maori word ‘Whakaari’ – held up to view – is named because of its position on the lower slopes of Flagstaff, a 666.3 summit which is prominent on the Dunedin landscape.

Our 3 congregations

Flagstaff Community Church is one church that meets in two locations. We invite you to connect with us and with our communities and to get involved in life in the church. Our worship services are open to everyone and we’d love to welcome you at any of our meetings or activities.

Hilltop Church
It’s church, but not as you know it! It’s an opportunity for families and individuals to come and be involved in activities together and to learn about God and the gospel message. A nourishing meal is provided for everyone to enjoy. Part of our aim is to ‘Growing great families’ and ‘Growing great community’ and our themes reflect that.

Wakari Church
A service of worship for all ages which meets weekly, enjoys singing, good coffee and has a mixture of worship styles including modern hymns and home grown music. We are recognised as a Kids Friendly Church.

Halfway Bush Church
A service of worship which meets regularly and enjoys singing traditional hymns and biblical teaching and a supportive faith community.
